NHS Health Check competence framework launched

The NHS Health Check competence framework has been launched today replacing the vascular risk assessment: workforce competences. The updated NHS Health Check competency framework is now available to download here.

The NHS Health Check competence framework describes the core competences and technical competences required to carry out an NHS Health Check. It also refers to the code of conduct and the care certificate that all people carrying out an NHS Health Check should aspire to.

The framework sets out clear competences required of providers in general practice, pharmacy, community and other settings, with an enhanced focused on behaviour change skills for better health outcomes. The design of the framework has been based on ten competency areas that follow a sequence similar to delivering an NHS Health Check. Each competency is supported with hyperlinks to further information on best practice, programme standards and NICE guidance.

The NHS Health Check competency framework was developed and the standards selected by the NHS Health Check national competency and training working group. The working group consisted of professionals from Skills for Health, Health Education England, NHS England, local government, the Royal Society for Public Health, Royal College of Nursing, and health professionals supporting the delivery of the NHS Health Check.

PHE will be releasing further documents and resources to support competence and training of the NHS Health Check programme, including a competency assessorís tool, one-day training workshops across the country, and a dedicated area on the national website for commissioners to share locally developed assessment and training resources.
