Did you know that the NHS Health Check programme is included in the Public Health Responsibility Deal?

Public health commissioners may wish to explore the benefits of working alongside local employers to promote access or even delivery of the NHS Health Check programme as part of the Public Health Responsibility Deal

The Public Health Responsibility Deal has been set up to tap into the potential for businesses and other influential organisations to make a significant contribution to improving public health.

Employers are advised that by encouraging their employees to participate in health and wellbeing programmes such as NHS screening programmes when invited can benefit their organisation by reducing both absenteeism and presenteeism at no added cost to them as an employer.  People's health and wellbeing can impact greatly on their work performance as well as whether they are off work temporarily or permanently.  This will clearly affect an organisation's productivity and businesses' profitability.

The health at work network has been set up as part of one of the core commitments to support our workforces to lead healthier lives.  In acknowledgement of the key role that health checks play in staff health and wellbeing, a pledge has been developed as follows:

“We will offer staff health checks, e.g. the NHS Lifecheck, with appropriate follow up and audit.  We will also encourage eligible employees to participate in the NHS Health Check for vascular disease, and other NHS screening programmes (for example for breast or bowel cancer).”

Further information is available on the Responsibility Deal and on the Health at Work Network.  It is easy and free to sign up to the Deal and the 7 health at work pledges provide a framework for developing your staff health and wellbeing programme.
